The governor of the Central Bank, Saddek Elkaber, has stated that Libya is witnessing a huge demand for Sharia-compliant banking systems to be present. As a result, a higher committee has been set up to discuss Islamic finance which could even be present by the end of the year.
Furthermore, a specific licence could be introduced for the practicing of Islamic banking.
Several options have been discussed at this stage, inter alia; permitting conventional banks to become Islamic or allowing them to open branches for Islamic finance in Libya instead.
